Modern, light-filled warehouse

Bermondsey, London, SE1

Project scope: Kitchen renovation

Completion: December 2024

Sustainability:

This project transformed a tired kitchen into a striking open-plan living space with new zonal areas for cooking, dining and socialising.

The design incorporated the raw, industrial charm of the space, such as the brick walls and large steel windows. The use of earthy tones and modern contemporary design preserves the authenticity of the warehouse while elevating it with contemporary comforts and a warm, inviting feel.

‘The key was to strike a balance between the raw, industrial charm of the space and the sleek functionality of contemporary design. We achieved this by retaining exposed structural elements and using an earthy colour palette keep the kitchen warm and inviting’

-Simon, Head of Design at Beams

Phase 1: Plan

Project planner

Courtney

Nuan and Peter, both busy professionals, entrusted Beams to handle the planning and project management, allowing them to focus on their work priorities. For the couple, maintaining the authenticity of the warehouse aesthetic was essential, along with achieving quality and thoughtful design. Brooke took the time to ensure the design process was carefully considered, pairing them with a builder who not only understood their vision but also brought the expertise necessary to bring it to life.

The layout

Simon embraced the open-plan nature of the warehouse to create a layout that maximized space and flow. By designing a kitchen that seamlessly connects to the surrounding living and dining areas, he preserved the expansive feel of the original structure. Key elements, such as a central breakfast bar and exposed shelving, were used to enhance functionality without disrupting the openness. The layout was carefully crafted to respect the building’s industrial roots while ensuring practicality and a modern sense of cohesion.

The aesthetic

Simon’s aesthetic vision celebrated the warehouse’s industrial charm while elevating it with contemporary design. Exposed brick, steel and dark wood were complemented with minimalist cabinetry and bottle green tiling. He balanced textures and tones with a neutral color palette, incorporating bold statement pieces, such as oversized pendant lights and a large breakfast bar, to create visual interest. By juxtaposing raw, reclaimed elements with clean, modern lines, Ribchester achieved a timeless yet stylish industrial-modern fusion

“Both the customer and Beams were really happy with the end result - exceptional workmanship and quality assurance that will stand the test of time”.
